As the crisp autumn air begins to arrive, replacing the vibrant hues of summer, we witness the annual cycle of change in nature. Just as the leaves transform from vibrant green to fiery red and gold, our own lives are also subject to constant evolution. From the return of children to school after a long summer break to the shifting seasons, change is an ever-present force that shapes our experiences.
Most of the Millennial women coming to my therapy practice are in some version of transition or change. It is often described as daunting, scary or impossible. Fear and anxiety are often two of the major emotions getting in their way of dreaming big and moving towards a life they desire. Change and transitions happen either because of our choices or they are out of our control. In either scenario, how do we learn to ride the waves of change when those limiting emotions arise?
The human experience is navigating the complexities of life and embracing a constant state of flux. Whether it's career transitions, relationship changes, or personal growth, the journey is marked by both excitement and uncertainty. As we navigate these challenges, it's essential to remember that change is a natural part of life and an opportunity for growth.
As a Millennial woman myself, I've recently embarked on a significant career transition, leaving behind the familiar comforts of my previous role to pursue my passion for psychotherapy. This decision was not without its challenges, as I wrestled with feelings of uncertainty and fear about the unknown. However, I also experienced a sense of excitement and anticipation about the possibilities that lay ahead.
Embracing this change required me to step outside of my comfort zone and confront my fears head-on. By acknowledging my anxieties and understanding their root causes, I was able to dismantle their hold over me. Instead of letting fear paralyze me, I chose to focus on the potential for growth and self-discovery that this transition offers.
Through this process, I've learned that embracing change is not just about overcoming fear, but also about opening ourselves up to new possibilities and unlocking our true potential. By stepping outside of our comfort zones and embracing the unknown, we can discover hidden strengths, develop new skills, and create a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
A few reflection questions for you:
How does fear or doubt impact your ability to cope with change?
When was the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone?
What motivated you to take the risk? How did it feel?
What did you learn about yourself?
Fear wants to keep us safe, and sometimes we need to hold its hand while we move in the direction of our dreams.
